Hanover, Germany
At the turn of the millennium the Swiss hospitality consultant Juerg Landert organized the Trend Hotel conference and exhibition for AIT Architecture Magazine in in Hanover, Germany. He invited JMA to create an installation investigating the future of hospitality design. The humanistic environment JMA created explored the experiential possibilities resulting from the combination of traditional craftwork and digital tools.
The exhibition created a unique enclosed environment populated by provocative objects. The exhibition shell was made by translating models hand-sculpted in Chicago into hundreds of vertical and horizontal digital sections which were used to create full scale steel framing components hand bent in a workshop in Germany. The prefabricated framing was then assembled and plastered on site in Hanover.
Similarly, maquettes for cabinets were hand sculpted in Chicago, translated into digital information and cut by computer directed machines in Germany. Other components were hand-sculpted and manufactured in Chicago.
