MAD61 / Fred's

The first Fred’s, 1992. A 12,000 square foot emporium offine Italian delicacies in room with mid-century Milano overtones at Barneys New York, 61st and Madison in Manhattan. A collaboration with the founding Pressman family and chef Pino Luongo, a fusion of retail delicacies and dining, featuring a shop by cheese guru Steven Jenkins, a sommelier’s wine bar, a bakery with a wood fired oven, a café, a fine dining restaurant and a panini kiosk.
Barneys New York at 61st and Madison was the largest new store built in Manhattan since the Great Depression. JMA worked with Chef Pino Luongo, Fred Presman, his son Gene Pressman and Simon Doonan to create the food emporium, originally named Mad61 and re-named Fred’s after Fred Pressman’s passing. It was completed 17 years before Eataly opened in New York.
1950’s Milan inspired JMA’s food emporium designs, a style consistent with the sensibilities of patrons shopping for high fashion Italian luxuries at Barney’s New York.
JMA designed every component from scratch. To insure design fidelity, budget and schedule, Mozer Studios manufactured furnishings, fixtures and hardware in Chicago and directed the installation on site.
