These AnnaMae candlesticks were created from sculptures hand-carved by the artist in 2003 for AnnaMae Restaurant in Biloxi Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Resort Hotel. They were re-imagined as candlesticks and presented to his wife on her birthday.
AnnaMae was a Japanese-American restaurant. The restaurant drowned in Hurricane Katrina.
The design has a myriad of intertwined inspiration: the serendipity of the Japanese homonym "anime"; the curly willow trees that the artist learned, on a trip to Japan, symbolize grace and femininity; the heartbreaker "Little Anna Mae" from a Mississippi Muddy Waters blues song; the artist’s mother, mother-in-law and first born daughter all share the middle name Mae.
