The H57 Boudoir lamps were created for JMA’s renovation of a quirky 1920’s building on 57th street between Park Avenue and Lexington in New York.
The building was originally a progressive residence for women in the arts and academia, a project undertaken by an Upper East Side fashion designer named Blum in the flapper era. The new hotel design, commissioned by Apple Hotels, offered an idiosyncratic antidote to the commercial environs surrounding Hotel 57.
PROCESS + MATERIALS
This Boudoir Lamp body was created by hand-carving maple wood. Each leg varies slightly by design. The carving was cast in 95% recycled red-bronze, which was then hand-polished and bathed in elixirs and flames to patina the metal. Glass was blown by hand for the lampshade: each piece of glass is unique. The cord is dressed in a shirred "sweater". Wiring is acceptable for commercial use. The Apple Blossom and Diablo Finials are both composed of recycled red bronze. Made in Chicago.
