The design was originally created for a collection commissioned by Holly Hunt in 1985 — when the artist lived on the fourth floor of a vast, unfinished industrial loft. She showered every morning at the gym where the Nautilus exercise machines had upholstered cylindrical cushions and the idea of ergonomic "healthy" seating was new and fashionable.
This variation of the chair frame was created by the artist as a lounge chair for the Sabrina NightClub in Chicago. The leather upholstery and escutcheon details were developed in 2015.
PROCESS + MATERIALS
The Nautilus lounge chair is composed of an oxidized, mandrel-bent steel tube and heavy wire with welded connections. It is upholstered in leather with steel escutcheons.
