This table was inspired by contemporary graffiti in Rio de Janeiro and pre-Columbian Inca sculptures. It shares the artist’s brother’s nickname and personality.
The Creature Table was created for JMA’s fourth collaboration with Chef Michael Cordua, Americas Restaurant in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood.Chef Cordua is celebrated for brilliantly and irreverently mixing exclusively indigenous South American foodstuffs with European preparation techniques, producing contemporary North American dishes. JMA and Chef Cordua have been collaborating on projects about the Americas since 1992, exploring the myriad cultures blended together in the Americas; the narratives of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges and Cormack McCarthy; as well as the anthropology of dining touched on, for instance, by Jared Diamond and Charles C. Mann.
