JMA created a design for the renovation of Hotel 57 in 2009-2010. The building was originally built by a fashion designer named Blum in the roaring 20’s as a progressive residence for women in the arts and academics and business, an alternative to boarding houses. The hotel was built with hand wrought iron and distinctive handmade bricks. The lines of 1920’s fashion and the idiosyncrasy of Blum’s hotel were woven into the renovation and the components that populated the spaces.
PROCESS + MATERIALS
The base form was hand carved in maple: each leg is slightly different. The sculpture was cast in 95% recycled red-bronze, hand-polished, then treated with elixirs and bathed in flames to create a patina.
Each of the eight arms of the table are slightly different, a nod to their handmade quality and an effort to provide a refuge from the stress of commercial travel.
